What to Wear for School Photos: A Parent’s Guide to Timeless Looks

School picture day comes around, and suddenly you’re standing in front of your child’s closet thinking… why does this feel harder than it should be?

You want something that looks like them. Something you’ll still love a year from now. Something that doesn’t feel overdone or forced.

The good news is, it doesn’t have to be complicated.

As a Baltimore school portrait photographer, I always tell parents the same thing: simple choices almost always photograph best.

Keep It Simple with Color

Solid, classic colors tend to work beautifully.

Think navy, cream, soft pastels, muted greens, or warm neutrals. These tones keep the focus where it belongs – on your child’s face and expression.

Nothing too loud. Nothing pulling your eye away.

Skip the Busy Patterns

What looks cute in person doesn’t always translate the same way in a photo.

Bold patterns, logos, or bright graphics can become distracting and take attention away from your child. Simpler pieces tend to hold up better over time and feel more like them, not the outfit.

Layers Can Add a Nice Touch

A light layer – like a cardigan, denim jacket, or simple sweater – can add a little depth without overcomplicating things.

It also gives a bit of flexibility depending on the temperature, which helps kids stay comfortable and relaxed.

Comfort Matters More Than You Think

If something feels itchy, stiff, or unfamiliar, it usually shows.

When kids feel comfortable, they settle in faster. Their expressions are more natural. The whole experience feels easier for them, and that always comes through in the photo.

For Siblings: Coordinate, Don’t Match

If you’re dressing more than one child, aim for colors that work well together instead of identical outfits.

Soft contrast photographs beautifully and still feels cohesive without looking overly styled.

A Note on Accessories

A small detail can be a nice touch – a simple bow, a headband, a favorite sweater. But less is usually more.

If it pulls your attention before you even notice your child’s face, it’s probably too much.

A Final Thought

At the end of the day, what you’ll care about most isn’t the outfit. It’s whether the photo feels like your child.

The way they looked in this season. The little expressions you recognize instantly. The version of them you don’t want to forget.

The outfit just supports that.

If you’re ever unsure, you can always reach out. I’m happy to help you choose something that feels simple, natural, and true to your child!
