Deciding what to wear for your maternity session can be tricky! As a mama working her way through her third pregnancy, I get it. You might not be feeling your best, and dressing your changing body in clothes that feel good and still reflect you can be tough. But, I promise we can find something that feels good and looks beautiful. I’m sharing my best tips for styling your maternity photo session.
I almost always recommend a long, flowy dress for mamas in any session. This style and cut looks feminine and lovely on every body type and photographs so beautifully. A flowy dress can also add movement to still images and it just looks so pretty. Note: Avoid the stretchy jersey knit if at all possible. This fabric doesn’t photograph well.
When is your session taking place? Consider this when choosing colors and fabric. Neutrals and earthy tones looks beautiful year round. Jewel tones are a fun option for fall and winter. Similarly, some fabrics are better suited for warmer weather, like a light linen. A gorgeous velvet adds a nice element to cooler weather sessions. If you want to use this as a reason to get dressed up, go for it!
When styling your family, opt for colors that compliment your outfit rather than match it. There are two ways I recommend to families: pick hues within the same color family, or pick two colors that look beautiful together. Mixing in a variety of fabrics can add dimension to your wardrobe, and when the weather allows, layers are also a great idea.
There will be some images with close ups of hands. You may want to consider trimming and filing nails, or a mani if that’s your thing. Likewise, some mamas choose to go the dressed up route and get professional hair and make up. This is completely optional but something some mamas choose. If that’s not your vibe, that’s okay!
If your maternity session is taking place in home (swoon!!), your outfits will need a different vibe. In home, I recommend comfy, cozy, timeless pajamas – something similar to what you might wear around the house, but definitely a step up from leggings and the same t-shirt you’ve been wearing for two days in a row. In terms of colors, think about what colors are in and around your home and use that for inspiration.
