One FAQ I get as a Baltimore family photographer is, “What time will our Baltimore family session be?” For outdoor sessions, the answer is pretty easy and pretty straight forward: golden hour.

Have you heard of golden hour before? It’s the hour or so after sunrise, and the one to two hours before sunset. When the sun is low in the sky, it creates a magical, warm glow that adds depth, dimension, and a sense of enchantment to photographs. The exact timing and duration of golden hour varies depending on the season and location.

Why golden hour?

Another easy answer: it’s what I love most and is a big part of my style! But don’t worry, I’ll never suggest a sunrise session. I know my limits, okay? 🙂

“Okay, but I have young kids and a late session will be hard.”

As a mom of two toddlers, I get that! With countless family sessions under my belt as a Baltimore family photographer, though, I can tell you: we can make it work, and make it fun!

Tips for a Successful Family Photo Session

a. Plan Ahead: To ensure a smooth golden hour session, plan your day accordingly. Consider adjusting your family’s schedule to accommodate the later start time, allowing time for a slightly later/longer nap if applicable. Plan for plenty of time to get ready and make sure everyone is well fed! If your kids are old enough to understand, let them know your family is going to meet a new friend and have some fun together!

b. Bring Essentials: As the session may extend into the evening, depending on the time of the year, it’s essential to bring along a few items to keep everyone comfortable. Consider packing insect repellent to ward off bugs, and some snacks or drinks to keep everyone energized. Just be sure to bring snacks/drinks that won’t stain mouths.

c. Jammies in the Car: Some parents have brought along pajamas to change into after a session. Not every family opts for this, but you know what will work best for your family!
